15 Best Viewpoints in Porto, Portugal

Built on the side of a hill that cascades down to the Douro River, Porto’s naturally tiered construction makes for incredible scenery. In fact, I think it has some of the best views of any city in Europe—and I’ve been to 15 different countries just on this continent!

After living in the city for a month and visiting for a week prior to that, discovering the viewpoints in Porto was one of the reasons I fell in love with this city.

While my favorite miradouro (you’ll have to read to see which one!) always captures my imagination, there are so many magical corners of the city that are worthy of exploring for fellow pretty view chasers.

Without further ado, here are seven of the best viewpoints in Porto, including where to watch the sunset and the best restaurants and hotels with beautiful views!

Best Viewpoints for Sunset in Porto

1. Torre dos Clerigos

Ever watchful from its precipice at the highest point in the city, the Clerigos Tower offers one of the best viewpoints in Porto. A bell tower attached to the church of the same name, you’ll need to climb about 240 stairs to reach the top of this Baroque pinnacle.

Once you reach the observation deck, you’ll be rewarded with sprawling views of the city. Clerigos Tower soars a whopping 246’ tall and the panoramic scenery is well worth the sometimes sweaty effort!

Keep in mind that the sun sets around 5:00 PM in winter, but doesn’t quite start to dip until 9:00 PM in summer, so Clerigos Tower is more of a spring/fall/winter sunset spot than during peak season.

Book your Clerigos Tower tickets here!

Location: Rua de São Filipe de Nery
Hours: 9:00 AM–7:00 PM

2. Se do Porto

The largest cathedral in the city, most visitors only ever step inside Se do Porto’s nave, not realizing that they can also purchase a ticket to climb to the top of its towers. We happened to see people standing at the top of the tower from our Airbnb and knew we had to climb it ourselves!

Visitors can stop by the church office to grab the €3 ticket, which grants access to bonus areas of the church, which are otherwise free to visit, like the second level terrace and tower.

You’ll also get the chance to see some of Porto’s most beautiful azulejos (traditional blue tiles) inside the cloisters and on the terrace— which is worth the admission fee alone!

After making your way up to the terrace, you’ll climb a steep and narrow set of stone stairs to reach the top of the right tower. On a clear day, views stretch all the way to the ocean and offer stunning scenes of Porto.

Location: Terreiro da Sé
Hours: 9:00 AM–6:30 PM

3. Dom Luis I Bridge

Porto’s most iconic landmark, the Dom Luis I Bridge, spans the Douro River, connecting the Ribeira neighborhood to Vila Nova de Gaia, where Porto’s famous port wine houses are located.

While the views from the bridge are impressive at any time of day, they’re particularly amazing at sunset! My husband and I watched the sunset from the Dom Luis I Bridge multiple times during our month living in Porto (and our week trip the year before that).

Taking a stroll across the Dom Luis I Bridge is also one of the best things to do at night in Porto! There’s something so magical about watching the city come alive with twinkling lights and watching the tram cross the bridge.

Location: Dom Luis I Bridge
Hours: 24/7

4. Jardins do Palacio de Cristal

Picture this: a sprawling, tiered garden overlooking the winding Douro River and filled with swaying palm trees and hundreds of…different species of birds?

The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal is one of Porto’s most beautiful greenspaces. You can hear the peacocks beckoning you as you get closer to the entrance and see them wandering the grounds, alongside chickens, roosters, seagulls, and ducks.

Avian friends aside, these gardens are simply gorgeous with sweeping views of the river and the Arrabida Bridge in the distance. This is one of the best sunset and picnic spots in Porto in my opinion.

On a clear day you can see all the way to the breaking ocean waves in the distance. Just look off to the right, towards the Atlantic!

Location: Rua de D. Manuel
Hours: 8:00 AM–7:00 PM

Best Miradouros in Porto

5. Miradouro da Rua das Aldas

Tucked just opposite the Se do Porto, the overview of Igreja dos Grilos is one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Porto. Offering an unparalleled birds eye view of the chapel, this is an ideal spot to people watch, admire the Se do Porto and city scenery.

On a clear day, make a beeline for Miradouro da Rua das Aldas at sunset as the golden light shines on Porto’s rooftops, cascading down to the Douro River.

I’ve stood at this very miradouro pondering the meaning of life and snapping photos countless times on my adventures in Porto! I can also say that I watched one of the best sunsets of my life here, but equally adore visiting on a misty day when the moss on the outside of the chapel really shines.

If I had to pick, Miradouro da Rua das Aldas might be my favorite viewpoint in Porto!

Location: Miradouro da Rua das Aldas
Hours: 24/7

6. Miradouro da Vitória

Hidden in the historic Ribeira neighborhood, Miradouro da Vitoria is a slightly run down (i.e. trash and graffiti) overlook but offers beautiful views nonetheless.

You’ll see scenery of the Se do Porto cathedral and the Douro River in the distance. Make your way down the Escala da Vitoria, a winding staircase and unique photo opportunity that gradually leads down to the Rua de Belomonte and Cais da Ribeira riverfront promenade.

Location: R. de São Bento da Vitória 11
Hours: 24/7

7. Miradouro da Serra do Pilar

As you cross the top level of the Dom Luis I Bridge headed towards Vila Nova de Gaia, you can’t miss the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar. This former monastery, perched on a stone retaining wall, is surrounded by a sprawling miradouro.

The Miradouro da Serra do Pilar is unique in that it offers views of Porto’s historic old town and overlooks the port wine cellars along the Cais da Ribeira de Gaia. You’ll also get a birds eye view of the Jardim do Morro, another beautiful greenspace with pretty scenery.

If you want an even more unique view, head over to the Teleferico de Gaia, located just across the street. Tickets are just €10 roundtrip or €7 one way and make a great way to get down to the riverfront or back up to the monastery if you don’t feel like walking.

You’ll soar over the rooftops of the Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood with 360° views of Porto and traditional rabelo boats floating on the Douro River below.

Location: Largo Aviz
Hours: 24/7

Best Restaurants with Views in Porto

8. MiraJazz

What could be better than live Jazz and sweeping views of the Douro River? All of that paired with wine and snacks! MiraJazz is one of my favorite wine bars in Porto and seriously delivers on scenery and vibes.

This rooftop bar has live music most evenings and great deals on drinks, including a port wine tasting for just €16.

It takes a little bit of sleuthing to find MiraJazz as it’s tucked away on an almost hidden staircase near the river. If Google Maps isn’t working, simply get directions to A Casa do Fado and take the staircase across the street.

Location: Escadas do Caminho Novo 11
Hours: 1:00–9:00 PM, Everyday

9. Vinum Wine Bar

As far as restaurants with views in Porto, it’s hard to beat the Wine Bar at Vinum

Located inside Graham’s Port Lodge, the Vinum restaurant is a destination in itself for a special occasion or romantic evening, but the Wine Bar is where the views really shine.

Situated on a terrace that overlooks the Douro River, the Vinum Wine Bar highlights the restaurant’s extensive wine list. You’ll find both Portuguese favorites and wines from around the globe, paired with a delicious menu of carefully curated petiscos like oysters from the Algarve.

Location: Rua do Agro 141
Hours: 11:00 AM–12:00 AM, Everyday

10. Orpheu

Tucked between the colorful buildings of the Ribeira neighborhood, Orpheu is a little wine bar with stunning views of the Clerigos Tower. You’ll find everything from port wine to delicious cocktails and petiscos (aka Portuguese tapas).

I might be a little biased because Orpheu is easily one of my favorite wine bars in Porto! It was my husband and my go-to for aperitivo in the center of Porto and their staff are absolutely lovely and very patient with us trying to practice our Portuguese.

Location: Rua da Bainharia 65
Hours: 2:30–10:30 PM, Thursday to Monday

11. Digby

Located inside the Torel Avantgarde Hotel in the Miragaia neighborhood, Digby offers up pretty views of the Douro River and Vila Nova de Gaia. Dripping with Bohemian decor, the extensive wine list is solely dedicated to Portuguese wines that come from as far as Madeira and the Azores!

Choose from grabbing dinner off their a la carte menu, which features a modern take on traditional dishes like suckling pig and gnocchi or monkfish with eel. You can also keep it simple with the snack bar menu, chock full of pizza, sandwiches, and other light bites.

Location: Rua da Restauração 336
Hours: 11:30 AM–10:30 PM, Everyday

Best Places to Stay with Views in Porto

12. Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro

Located in the Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood, across the Douro River from Porto’s historic center, Hotel Vincci Ponte de Ferro is a four star, luxury property with truly jaw dropping views of the famous Dom Luis I Bridge.

Take a dip in the plunge pool while you watch the iconic tram roll by, sip a glass of port in the Art Deco meets modern lobby, or hole up in your room with a view.

The terrace, sun deck, lounge, and many of the rooms offer unparalleled scenery of both the city and the bridge. Be sure to book a room that’s described as “with views” to ensure you’re getting the best scenes of the cityspace!

13. The Yeatman

Touting possibly the best views of all Porto properties, The Yeatman is a part of the esteemed Relais & Chateaux hotel group.

This five star self-described wine hotel is set on seven acres that overlook the Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood and Porto’s historic Ribera neighborhood across the river. Even better, every single room has an incredible view.

In my humble opinion, a stay at The Yeatman is wonderful for those extra special occasions but a little bit spendy otherwise. Still, if you’re spending your honeymoon in Porto or really looking to splash out, you can’t do much better.

Book your stay at The Yeatman here!

14. Torel Avantgarde

Another five-star property with five-star views, Torel Avantgarde is a luxury, boutique property in the Miragaia neighborhood. Guests have views of the Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood across the river and over the terracotta rooftops that surround the hotel.

Many of the rooms have great views, but book the Executive Royal, Maisonette, Executive Deluxe Double, and Hot Tub Suite are all worthy of the price tag! The onsite Calla Wellness Spa also offers stunning scenery.

15. Airbnb

This is the AirBNB that my husband and I always stay at in Porto! We love the convenient location, A/C, comfy bed, and full kitchen, but the best part? The incredible views of the city and Se do Porto.

I will say that its location is right on one of the most touristy streets in the city, but that also makes it easy to get just about anywhere you want to go. It’s just a 5-minute walk to the São Bento train station, which makes taking day trips from Porto by train a breeze!

Final Thoughts

As you might be able to see by now, Porto’s viewpoints are worthy of visiting the city alone! From enchanting miradouros that overlook the Douro River to sprawling gardens that are home to peacocks and summiting cathedral towers, seeking out any of these views in Porto is an adventure.

Of course, I’m sure you’ll find your own favorite viewpoints while you’re exploring the city! One of my favorite things to do is to combine hopping between these scenic spots and finding the gorgeous azulejos, traditional blue Portuguese tiles, that you’ll see around seemingly every corner.

If you do happen to stumble upon a view or two that isn’t listed here, drop them down in the comments below and I’ll find them on my next visit to Porto.
